Pip Jenkins, the design director and head designer of JOHN SMEDLEY, had a sharing with us in the morning. In the sharing, Pip shared plenty of details informations about knitwear market and factory.
As the design director, Pip needs to collaborate with her team and divide the work effectively. Seeing how detailed her working scatter diagrams are, it reminded me about the back scenes of a completed garment. Fast fashion has become a trend for a peroid. This atmosphere is forming the lack of garment values, which people may not treasure their clothes after they own them. In fact it wouldn't not be an easy thing to change. Different from the past generations, nowadays young people may not have strong consciousness of feeling cherish for things they have as it is now too easy too get what we want. But somehow, I think the rising of second-hand and vintage products could make the situation better. Not only the price is more affordable but also the qualities are still here. Some of them are even being remade coming out as unique new designs. It really improve the cycles of fashion industries.
Speaking of second-hand and vintage products, I personally love them especially those in Japan and European countries. Their quality-price ratio is perfect and sometimes may find 'treasures' between the hangers. I always find nice pieces in vintage stores, especially for knitwear. These are the vintage knitted jumper I got from Barcelona, Spain:
Never the last, hopefully the culture of second-hand and vintage could keep positively influencing the fashion industry and the mainstream. For suggestions in the UK, websites and apps like Etsy, Vinted and Ebay are really good starts with join the second-hand communities. If you prefer physical branches, White Rose and temporary vintage kilo sales are also nice choices for you.
